What does the program entail?

Data Scientists possess in-depth expertise, the ability to quickly grasp different topics, think critically, and develop creative solutions.

Content

In the Bachelor's program in Data Science & AI, you will learn programming in Python and R, statistics, data analysis and visualization, and dive into machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning. You will become familiar with applications such as natural language processing, image and signal-based deep learning, social network analysis, and recommender systems. You will learn how to work with databases, cloud services, and high performance computing, and develop efficient machine learning algorithms. You will acquire the ability to apply your work as a Data Scientist to economic or social issues and understand their legal and ethical implications.

Beyond technical expertise, we support you in developing your 21st Century Skills: communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. We help you strengthen your personal and social competence through individual coaching. And – last but not least – you will acquire the most important tool in a rapidly changing world: you will learn to direct your own learning and continuously develop yourself.

For English language skills, the minimum requirement for studying at the School of Computer Science FHNW is the CEFR English level B1. However, for this program we recommend the CEFR English level B2. You will complete a English placement test your studies. If you are assessed below B2, we recommend attending the Professional Communication Coaching in English module.

If you want to independently bring your English skills to the required level, we recommend the following resources:

  • britishcouncil.org
  • ego4u.com
  • flo-jo.co.uk

Program Structure

The program consists of eleven module groups, all of which you must complete. Which specific modules you take is up to you, as we have no mandatory modules (except for the Bachelor's thesis). There is no regular semester plan; you decide which modules to take and when. You can also choose which module group to emphasize by taking more modules in that area.

The BSc in Data Science & AI can be completed as a full-time or part-time program. The standard duration for full-time study is three years, or six semesters. Full-time study is equivalent to full-time employment and is not compatible with professional work.
In part-time mode, depending on your study load, you should expect four to six years of study. We recommend planning a minimum of 50% of your time for your studies. You can decide each semester whether you want to continue studying part-time or full-time.
To successfully complete the program, it is important that you can organize your professional or private obligations in a flexible manner. The maximum duration of study is twelve semesters, or six years (leave semesters are not counted).

Students who acquire relevant competencies outside of their studies can demonstrate these in a simplified way in many modules to pass them. Relevant modules from previous studies (completed or not) can be credited.
