Internationalization Canvas and Workshops

The Market Oriented “Value-Based SME Internationalization Canvas” and strategy workshops

To support your business in identifying international or global opportunities, we have created a workshop canvas that guides SME through a strategy workshop process and ensures that a solid, resources and capabilities based, market orientated internationalization strategy exists which will support business success.

The canvas includes nine important steps:

1: Your Value Proposition
  • What is your firm’s value proposition?
  • How do your firm’s products/services allow customers in your local market to complete their jobs by providing gains and alleviating their pains?
2: Domestic Market Capabilities

What are your core capabilities/strengths/ assets that allow you to compete successfully in your home market?

3: Foreign Market Potential

Where do you see foreign market opportunities abroad for your value proposition and why?

4: Foreign Market Capabilities
  • How well do your domestic capabilities support foreign market opportunities?
  • What internationalization capabilities do you already have in-house?
5: Value Proposition and International Potential
  • How well does your value proposition fit into the potential foreign markets?
  • Which target markets/segments do you want to win?
  • How contested are the target markets/segments you want to win?
6: Closing the Proposition Gaps
  • What is the optimal strategic positioning for the target markets/segments (standardization, adaptation and / or arbitrage)?
  • What needs to be changed so that your value proposition better fits potential / attractive foreign markets?
  • What is the optimal product/service level strategy (standardization / adaptation)?
  • How does this neutralize competitors in the target markets/segments?
7: Making it Happen Yourself

What are the barriers that you face (and how can you overcome them) to sell your products/services abroad (as successfully as you sell them locally today)?

8: Leveraging the Ecosystem

What partners and (external) resources do you need/can you build/leverage to succeed in the foreign market/s?

9: Your Internationalization Roadmap

What are the projects, tasks, owners and budgets needed to implement your roadmap for an effective international strategy?
