Bachelor Computer Science
There are no fixed classes. From the second semester onwards, you can enrol in courses across degree programmes and create your own individual timetable.

Bachelor Data Science & AI
The semester structure of the FHNW School of Computer Science also applies to the Bachelor’s degree programme in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence.

Computer Requirements
For your studies at the FHNW School of Computer Science, you will need a laptop.
For the start of your studies, please avoid purchasing a new device if possible and continue using your existing one. During your studies, you can purchase discounted devices through the Projekt Neptun programme if needed.

Fees and Costs
In accordance with the FHNW Education Fee Regulations (Gebührenordnung Ausbildung FHNW (PDF), the following semester fees apply from the 2025/26 academic year onwards:
Swiss citizens or individuals with civil residence in Switzerland | CHF 750.- |
Residence in an EU/EFTA member state* | CHF 1'000.- |
Residence outside Switzerland and the EU/EFTA** | CHF 5'000.- |
(*) The decisive factor is the civil residence at the start of studies (not the tax residence).
(**) Applies to students holding a residence permit issued exclusively for the purpose of studying.
For visiting students, the following applies: semester fee of CHF 100 per ECTS credit.

Admissions Examination
The entrance examination is intended for applicants holding a Federal VET Diploma (EFZ) or an equivalent foreign qualification who wish to begin their studies at the FHNW School of Computer Science without a vocational baccalaureate.
Die Aufnahmeprüfung richtet sich an Personen mit EFZ oder gleichwertiger ausländischer Vorbildung, die ohne Berufsmaturität ein Studium an der HSI FHNW beginnen möchten. Admission
You will be admitted to the entrance examination if you…
- are at least 25 years old at the start of your studies and
- hold a Federal VET Diploma (EFZ).
Your vocational qualification (EFZ) and professional experience must be related to the chosen field of study. Otherwise, you must provide evidence of at least one year of practical experience in the relevant field.
Applicants with a foreign qualification are also eligible for admission to the entrance examination, provided they have completed at least three years of upper secondary education (or an equivalent qualification) and have at least one year of professional experience in the subject area of the desired degree programme.
Examination Content & Preparation
The entrance examination covers the subjects German, English, Mathematics and Physics.You can find further details in the Entrance Examination syllabus (Stoffplan Aufnahmeprüfung (PDF)).
To prepare for the entrance examination, the FHNW School of Computer Science offers a modular preparatory course in Mathematics, Physics, Programming, German and English. The examination is integrated into this course.
You may also attend individual modules only. Further information is available from the FHNW Education Centre under Preparatory Courses FHNW (Vorbereitungskurse FHNW).

- Entry Spring Semester 2026: Thursday, 5 February 2026 and Friday, 6 February 2026
- Entry Autumn Semester 2026: Thursday, 18 June 2026 and Friday, 19 June 2026
- Possible oral examination:Thursday, 2 July 2026
Application
Registration for the entrance examination is completed online together with the Bachelor’s application.
The fee for the entrance examination is CHF 300 (see section “Fees and Costs”).

Scholarships
The scholarship system in Switzerland is regulated at cantonal level; the canton in which you reside is responsible.

If your scholarship application is rejected, you may also seek support from funds and foundations in your canton of residence.
In accordance with the Fee Regulations, a fee waiver may be granted upon request (see Process Description: Fee Waiver Prozessbeschreibung Gebührenerlass (PDF)).
The Lore und Rudolf Summermatter Stiftung supports students of the FHNW School of Computer Science who would otherwise be unable to complete their studies for financial reasons.
Study and Examination Regulations
Decisions made by FHNW are reviewed through an internal appeal procedure and may subsequently be challenged before the FHNW Appeals Commission.
