The aim of the workshop week is to compile an edition of complex text and image content, develop a design concept, and produce a booklet in the university's own workshops. Through exploratory design, participants examine the diversity and effect of different text-image compositions – first in individual areas, then in the dramaturgy of successive pages. In the process, they will learn basic design skills relating to font selection, typesetting, layout, and typographic and image grids. They will then apply production-related parameters such as prepress, paper materiality, laser printing processes, and simple bookbinding techniques in a practical setting.

Lecturer

Jinsu Ahn has been a lecturer in the BA and MA programmes at the Institute Digital Communication Environments (IDCE) at the HGK Basel FHNW since 2014. He has been teaching typography, book design, and conceptual design since 2011. Before graduating with an International Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Graphic Design from UIC/HGK, he completed a FH diploma with a focus on typography at HGK Basel and a BA in Visual Communication Design at Kyoungpook National University in Daegu, South Korea. He has successfully completed various design projects, including a research project on the development of a public design strategy in Daegu City, a documentation project for the Novartis Campus, and the development of a visual identity for the Upper Rhine region – Switzerland, France, and Germany. In addition, he translated Jan Tschichold's books «Typographic Design» and «Selected Essays on Questions of Book Design and Typography» as well as Emil Ruder's work ‘Typography’ into Korean. Jinsu Ahn regularly publishes in international journals on the subject of typography and leads workshops in the “CAS Visual Literacy” continuing education program at HGK Basel.
