Prof. Dr. Christian Mathis

Christian Mathis

Head of Chair of Teaching and Learning of Specialist Subjects

I'm a professor for General Studies Education (i.e. history, social studies, and science education) in Elementary, Pre-primary, and Primary school.

After several years of teaching experience in Switzerland I did a lic. phil. (MPhil) in history (major) and educational sciences (major) at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). I did my Dr. phil. (PhD) in history education at the University of Oldenburg (Germany).

My research interests:

  • Students' and pupils' conceptions of historical subject matter, e.g. French Revolution, Holocaust, Roman Empire, Neolithic Revolution
  • The 'Educational Reconstruction Model' as a framework for improving teaching and learning history and social science
  • Learning and teaching history and social studies in primary schools, secondary schools, and teacher education
  • Multiperspectivity and the change of perspective on a phenomenon as a powerful principal towards sophisticated thinking (Phenomenon orientated teaching and learning)
