The ZOOM@NOVARTIS program pairs promising PhDs from the University of Basel with a mentor at Novartis

Zarah (Neli) Motamed, a PhD student at the University of Basel and the FHNW School of Life Sciences, is participating in a unique mentoring program for women, called ZOOM@NOVARTIS. Highly qualified doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from the University of Basel are paired with a Novartis professional, based on the mentees’ area of interest.

Having studied pharmacy, Neli wished for a mentor with experience in clinical drug development. She was paired with Zhiyan Qian, Director of Clinical Development at Novartis, who has served 19 years with the company, progressing through roles of increasing seniority.

“During our monthly face-to-face meetings, I have the opportunity to discuss a range of topics with my mentor”, says Neli. “I can ask for Zhiyan’s input on technical approaches to projects I’m working on, how to develop management and leadership skills, tips for effective networking, and what types of career paths are possible in the pharma industry.”

The face-to-face meetings are complemented by regular workshops designed to help mentees identify their strengths, create their personal brand, practice interview skills, and learn about exciting research happening at Novartis. A closing session with mentors and mentees will be held to celebrate the journey and share experiences.

Ultimately, ZOOM@NOVARTIS aims to give mentees an in-depth look at career prospects in the world of business and science outside of academia, while gaining an insight into a global corporation.

“I am deeply committed to helping my mentees enhance their self-awareness, explore their potential, and ultimately discover their desired career path,” says Zhiyan. This type of commitment is what helps makes the program so successful for mentees like Neli.
