Educating Otherwise

24.9.2020 | Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel

Educating Otherwise – the continuing education program starts with a series of public evening lectures

It is often thought that art and design schools embody avantgarde, criticality and boundaryless experimentation. Nevertheless, a closer look at the contents and structures of Western art and design education shows that it still follows “universal” ideas, thoughts and norms of modernity, often sustaining and fortifying structural inequalities (such as sexism, racism, ableism, homophobia).

Using an intersectional lens “Educating Otherwise” aims to question the nature of curricula, we would like to discuss what, how and why we teach. Therefore, we invited various educators from different schools worldwide with whom we would like to initiate a process of co-learning and co-shar-ing “ to reflect on how to allow the students to navigate and expand their own practices more consciously.” (Lewengard, 2020)
How can we emancipate, transform and stimulate critical thinking? Which premises, methods and knowledge are socially relevant to our artistic and design practices?
