26.8.2022 | Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel, Institut Kunst Gender Natur

“Atmospheric Forest” VR at “Earthbound” Exhibition at HEK

Atmospheric Forest, an immersive installation by Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits will be on view at Earthbound - in Dialogue with Nature exhibition at HEK (September 2 – November 13, 2022), including a performance during the opening on September 2, 2022.

“Earthbound” exhibition, taking place from 2. September until 13. November 2022 at HEK, spotlights internationally renowned artists who implement media, technologies and technoscientific methods in their works, proposing solutions for a more sustainable coexistence with our environment.

The opening of the Earthbound exhibition takes place on September 2, 2022 at 7pm ; outside of the HEK entrance, at 9 pm, Rasa Smite will perform Atmospheric Forest - Resin Experiment, during which she will demonstrate the transformations which are happening in the pine-tree forest and atmospheric chemistry, resulting in fragrant emissions.

These invisible processes are visualized in the Atmospheric Forest - VR installation at the Earthbound exhibition. Atmospheric Forest is an immersive artwork by Rasa Smite and Raitis Smite, which reveals patterns of complex interactions between the emitting forest ecosystem, affected by climate change, and atmosphere.

Atmospheric Forest (2020) VR artwork and performance was created as a part of the “Ecodata–Ecomedia–Ecoaesthetics” (2017–2021) SNSF-funded research project led by Yvonne Volkart, at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design Basel (HGK), carried out in collaboration with the scientists from WSL Institute, Switzerland.
