Tartinians in Europe

The School of Nations and its Networks

Tartini’s Pedagogical Legacy: Research and Digital Edition of His Didactic Materials

From the beginning of his teaching activity in Padua in 1728 until the end of his career, Giuseppe Tartini trained an extraordinarily high number of students from various regions of Europe, exerting a significant influence on the musical landscape of his time.

Within the Weave project "Tartinians in Europe. The School of Nations and its Networks", one area of focus is dedicated to the didactic materials that Tartini either prepared or made available to his students. The team at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis is in charge of collecting and systematically studying these materials.

The primary goal is the creation of a digital edition of Tartini’s teaching materials, making them accessible and usable for both scholarly study and performance practice. In parallel, the editorial work includes in-depth research into the specific sources containing pedagogical instructions – both in terms of content and philological work – and a focused study of the terminology employed.

The analysis of these pedagogical writings aims to highlight key aspects of Tartini’s teaching and to reconstruct its essential principles. At the same time, it seeks to underscore the broader European relevance of these writings, particularly in the context of eighteenth-century musical training. The project ultimately seeks to position Tartini’s pedagogical legacy within a broader European framework, shedding light on how his approach contributed to the dissemination of musical knowledge and performance practices across the continent.
