We are the Food Culture Lab team from the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW. A community of teachers, students, supporters, friends, hosts & guests, and anyone who shares our table.
We want to develop food and cultural experiences in relation to design and art practices. We welcome a manifold of formats and iterations that explore food as a medium, as material, and as an interconnected living system.
We believe that food can be expressed, explored, and relates to:
images - cartographies - movies - books - sculptures - performances - photos - objects - eating encounters - cooking processes - gardens - cultivation activities - (food) ecological activism - tasting menus - food (cultures) rituals ... and you can keep on adding to this list.
We offer a well-equipped kitchen and a community space for gatherings. It is you that can turn it into a lab.
In this kitchen, everyday life cohabitates with events, projects, classes, and experiments around food.
We work collectively, in a dynamic of trust, responsibility, and open communication. We wish to provide a safe and nurturing space for our HGK community and the ever-growing food practitioner's network.
Just as the Bastard Cookbook says:
"Soup is a harmony where multiple ingredients get together supporting each other. They let go of their individual characters and collaborate with others to form new entities."
We aim to be like soup. Join the pot!
