Expertise and new experiences

The influence of a programme and how it can shape your life. Tiziano Kammermann tells how the programme he chose not just provided him with the right toolkit for his profession, but also gave him valuable experiences for life.

Why did you decide to study at FHNW at the time?

After completing my commercial apprenticeship, I asked myself what direction I wanted my future career to take. I knew that I was particularly interested in finance, so I began looking for institutions that offered a strong academic foundation in this field. The FHNW quickly stood out to me, especially with its Bachelor in Business Administration (International Management).

What convinced me was the programme’s broad and well-structured curriculum. It covers a wide range of topics beyond finance, enabling students to develop a holistic understanding of business. I was also very attracted by the opportunity to specialise in a specific area as the studies progress, allowing me to align my academic path with my professional interests.

Another important factor was the FHNW’s regional presence through its different campuses, which made it possible for me to pursue higher education close to home. In addition, the FHNW’s strong reputation in Switzerland, its practical orientation, and its close links to industry were further advantages. The combination of academic quality, real-world relevance, and a supportive learning environment made the FHNW the ideal choice for me.

How has the programme influenced your professional and personal development (current position, your role, your responsibilities)?

The programme has had a significant impact on both my professional and personal development. One of its greatest strengths is its strong practical orientation. Throughout my studies, I had the opportunity to engage not only with experienced lecturers but also with guest speakers directly from the industry. This exchange allowed me to approach relevant topics from a real-world perspective and build both a solid foundation and deeper expertise in key areas of business. I was particularly shaped by my specialisation in International Financial Management. The courses in this track covered exactly the topics I was most passionate about, and they provided valuable insights into the financial industry. The programme also enabled me to connect with professionals in the field and build long-lasting relationships. In fact, through the FHNW’s strong network, I was introduced to my current employer, which ultimately enabled me to pursue the position I had been aiming for.

On a personal level, the programme broadened my horizons considerably. I gained new perspectives that have been valuable not only in my work life but also in my everyday life. My semester abroad was especially influential, as it pushed me to grow, adapt to new environments, and develop intercultural competencies that I continue to benefit from today.

How did you experience your studies abroad?

My time studying in Groningen, in the Netherlands, was a key highlight of my academic path. Even though the Netherlands is geographically close to Switzerland and shares certain cultural similarities, living and studying in Groningen had a remarkably strong influence on me. The city’s international atmosphere exposed me to people from all over the world, allowing me to build connections far beyond Europe and gain a truly global perspective. I was constantly encouraged to step out of my comfort zone and adapt to new environments. The academic environment in Groningen, with its interactive teaching style and international student community, broadened my horizons and enriched my overall learning experience.

One of the real highlights of my time in Groningen was celebrating Bevrijdingsdag, the Dutch liberation day. The entire city transformed into one huge festival, music stages popped up across town, the streets were filled with people from early morning until late at night, and there was an incredible sense of togetherness and celebration everywhere you went. I remember walking through the city centre surrounded by live music, street food, and an atmosphere that felt both festive and meaningful. It was the kind of day where you truly felt part of the community, and it became one of my most memorable experiences in the Netherlands.

Which highlights from your time at FHNW do you especially like to look back on?

If I had to choose only one highlight, it would definitely be my semester abroad. It was an incredibly enriching experience that allowed me to grow both academically and personally. Beyond that, there are many moments I look back on fondly. I enjoyed meeting fellow students, building friendships, and learning from one another. I also appreciated the constant opportunity to discover new subjects and broaden my horizons throughout the programme.

One academic highlight was the course in Treasury Management. It had a significant impact on me, as it not only deepened my interest in financial markets but also laid the foundation for my professional direction. The practical insights into liquidity management, cash flow forecasting, risk assessment, and financial instruments gave me a clear understanding of the core responsibilities within corporate treasury. This course played an important role in shaping my career goals and made it clear to me that this was the field I wanted to work in.

How did the programme prepare you for your professional career?

The programme prepared me really well for my professional career by providing both a strong theoretical foundation and practical, industry-relevant skills. Throughout my studies, I gained exposure to key concepts that I now use daily in my field, such as financial analysis, valuation techniques, risk management, corporate finance, and international business principles. What truly set the programme apart was its ability to connect these concepts to real-world applications. Case studies, projects, and discussions with lecturers and industry experts helped me understand not only the “how” but also the “why” behind business decisions. Moreover, the programme’s interdisciplinary approach enabled me to see the bigger picture. I learned how different business functions, from finance and operations to strategy and marketing, interact and influence each other.

What advice would you give to current and future students?

I would encourage current and future students to actively connect with both their peers and lecturers. Building relationships with fellow students allows you to exchange ideas, learn from different perspectives, and create a network. At the same time, don’t hesitate to approach lecturers, especially if you are particularly interested in a specific field. Ask for guidance, request additional learning materials, and explore potential industry contacts they can introduce you to. This can be extremely valuable for shaping your career path. I would also strongly recommend taking the opportunity to study abroad. Experiencing a new environment, meeting students from all over the world, and gaining exposure to different academic and cultural perspectives is truly transformative and will benefit you both personally and professionally.
