XR experiences – where digital worlds meet reality.

Research focus areas

Within the field of expertise Extended Reality (XR), we research and develop immersive technologies that bridge the boundaries between the physical and the digital world. We work on applications in Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) that enable complex content to be communicated in a tangible, experiential and interactive way.

Our XR solutions are applied across a wide range of domains:

  • Education and Training: Virtual learning environments and simulation-based training scenarios.

  • Medicine: VR-supported therapy, medical visualisation and virtual companions.

  • Security and Forensics: Crime scene reconstruction and decision-support systems.

  • Psychology: Experimental environments for the study of behaviour and perception, including XR as research labs.

  • Culture, Architecture and Industry: Immersive applications for design, planning, communication and industrial innovation.

Our projects range from foundational research to the prototypical implementation on current XR platforms.

Predicting and preventing Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction (POCD) using augmented/mixed reality, serious games, machine learning: A focus on older patients.

This AI assistant is designed to support older adults before and after surgery and help detect, prevent and treat cognitive impairments at an early stage.

Scalable GenXR: Generative AI for extended reality in retail

Scalable GenXR—Generative AI for Extended Reality—explores novel methods for transforming one or a few 2D product images into high-quality 3D models for augmented and extended reality. The project aims to enable largely automated, scalable and sustainable 3D content creation for retail and beyond by reducing manual processing and improving energy efficiency.
