Teaching music

Building on their professional music education, students of the DAS Music Education programme focus entirely on the art of musical instruction:
The part-time, practice-oriented pedagogic education course enables to teach students of all ages in instrumental or vocal individual and group lessons at educational institutions or independently at all levels.

The DAS in Music Education is equivalent to the MA in Music Education instrument/voice. A corresponding degree is now required for employment at almost all Swiss music schools.

Target audience – Who is the DAS Music Pedagogy course aimed at?

The CAS/DAS Music Pedagogy continuing education programme is aimed at professional classical musicians (MA Performance instrumental/vocal or comparable study programme) who already have several years of teaching experience but do not yet have the required degree in music education and would like to additionally qualify for the teaching profession as an instrumental or vocal teacher.

Musicians with background Early Music please contact Kelly Landerkin. Musicians with background Jazz please contact the Student Administration Academy of Music, Jazz.

Structure and Content

The programme spans four semesters and consists of two consecutive certificate courses, CAS Music Education Basic and Advanced, which, upon successful completion of the final examination, lead to a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Music Education:

  • Certificate of Advanced Studies FHNW in Music Pedagogy – Basic in German
  • Certificate of Advanced Studies FHNW in Music Pedagogy – Advanced in German
  • Diploma of Advanced Studies FHNW in Music Pedagogy in German

The course content is based on the skills required for the profession of an instrumental or vocal teacher.

Modules and Reglements

The CAS/DAS-programmes at the Basel University of Music are based on modules.

The legally binding structure provides an initial guide to the content and weighting of the subjects on the continuing education. Several modules correspond to those in the degree programme. The time required for the DAS programme is approximately 900 hours spread over 4 semesters for 30 credit points. The weekly attendance time is approximately 6-8 lessons during the semester.
The detailed content and modalities of the individual subjects can be found in the module descriptions.

Structure

Detailed information per semester can be found in the belonging structure:

This certificate must be complete, i.e. all modules (reading, listening, writing, speaking) have been tested separately and passed at least at level B1 overall. Only certificates that have been certified with the ALTE-Q-Mark seal of approval (e.g. the B1 certificate of the Goethe-Institut or the telc certificate) are accepted.
