Joé Mertenat completed his BA (Visual Communication and digital Spaces) and his MA (Digital Communication Environments) at HGK Basel.
His research focuses on how visual and interactive frameworks and systems—such as interfaces, visualizations, and media artefacts—mediate data and information, structure understanding, and affect accessibility. In his master’s thesis, he critically examined how digital tools and visualization practices shape, constrain, and translate the production of meaning, proposing alternative approaches to visualizing complex and subjective data.
Before joining the Institute Digital Communication Environments (IDCE) as a research assistant, he worked on projects across digital product design, visual information systems, and visual communication. At IDCE, he contributes to the research project Text und Bild in Leichter Sprache, developing materials aimed at accessible and inclusive communication.
