      Teaching settings as an immersive learning experience

      Virtual reality in practical vocational training

      Project description

      The project “Teaching Settings as an Immersive Learning Experience – Virtual Reality in Practical Vocational Training” aims to document lessons and make them available as simulations for teaching. To this end, a range of interdisciplinary teaching methods employed in secondary II level education are being documented and made virtual in the form of 360-degree videos. The aim is to produce a teaching simulation that can be used to provide an immersive learning experience in methodological and didactic formats and support the training and continuing education of students and educators. In 2019, the FHNW University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland will not be able to publish immersive video content through the SWITCHtube or SWITCHcast video portals. However, SWITCH is using the project “Teaching Settings as an Immersive Learning Experience – Virtual Reality in Practical Vocational Training” as an opportunity to facilitate embedding VR content for university purposes in the future. It should be possible to publish the 360-degree videos starting in spring 2021.

      Project team

      Florian Olloz – Lecturer in audiovisual design at the FHNW School of Art and Design. As project manager, Florian Olloz was responsible for the technical aspects of developing the videos. His duties included planning and coordinating the necessary infrastructure (video cameras) as well as editing and processing the audio and video files. Florian Olloz was also responsible for project administration.

      Michael Ruloff – Holder of the Chair for Practical Professional Studies and Professionalisation at Secondary Education Level II. Michael Ruloff was responsible for coordinating filming dates with the schools (filming locations) and for managing the content of the interviews with the teachers involved. He was also responsible for the didactic framing of the videos and providing the teaching materials. Finally, he was and still is committed to ensuring that the videos can be used for teaching.
