«Basel Dialogues» is the name of the new critical publication series from the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW, in which internationally renowned experts from the fields of art, design and architecture have their say. In conversation, they offer insights into the experiences and reflections that arise from their current practice - personal, passionate, thought-provoking and humorous.

The first volume entitled «Real Intelligence (and Other Flows and Fictions)», edited by Prof. Dr Claudia Perren, Director of the HGK Basel, and Quinn Latimer, Head of the Fine Arts Master's programme at the Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN), will be published in June 2024 and deals with questions of artificial and human intelligence, the relationship between documentation and reality and fiction as a form of design. The dialogues show that the most pressing problems of the present cannot be solved within individual fields and disciplines.

«We talk - that's what we've always done.» This is how the first volume of «Basel Dialogues» begins with current discourses from art, architecture, design, poetry and film. The dialogues revolve around topics such as artificial intelligence, the documentary gesture and the real, the bad copy of coloniality and fiction as a form of design. In doing so, they often evoke flows - of images, capital and language, as algorithms or liquids - and thus suggest the speed at which our ideas move. It becomes clear that the most urgent concerns of the present inevitably demand a transgression of forms and disciplines.

«Basel Dialogues» ocuses on the conversation and the dialogue form in order to provide an insight into the voices that currently enliven the Dreispitz campus. The dialogues come from the five institutes of the HGK Basel and raise central questions of our time. They shed light on ideas and conditions, forms and materials as well as politics and poetics, which personalities from the fields of art, architecture, design, poetry and film deal with in theory and practice both inside and outside the university. The book series, published by Christoph Merian Verlag, will be continued every two years.
