Electric Power Systems Lab FHNW

In the Electric Power Systems Lab our experts measure energy technology components such as magnetic components, power converters and electrical machines. They also test charging stations and batteries for electromobility as well as electromagnetic simulations and modeling of machines and drive components.

Our offer

Test range of electrical machines and drive systems:

  • Efficiency measurement of rotating electrical machines and total drives according to IEC 61800-9
  • Static and dynamic load measurements
  • Parameter identification of rotating electrical machines

Test range of magnetic components:

  • Hysteresis and loss measurement of materials in the high, medium and low frequency range
  • Inductance and frequency response

Test offer for e-mobility:

  • Measurement of charging stations and batteries

Simulations / Modeling / Tools:

  • Electromagnetic simulations
  • Design of electrical machines and drive components
  • Multiphysical calculations

Infrastructure

The Electric Power Systems Lab offers the following infrastructure:

  • E-mobility testing
  • Bidirectional sources and loads AC/DC
  • Several high-precision power meters
  • Grid model with small hydropower plant for training purposes

Motor test bench for power up to 5 kW and measurement with variable speed.

The Electric Power Systems Lab is part of the FHNW Institute of Electric Power Systems

  • Institute of Electric Power Systems

The main areas of our work are power electronic systems and drives, as well as power grids.
