Information on programme contents
Having completed your MA course you have the ability to sensitise and motivate learners and the competence to perceive, reflect and act with regard to visual culture as well as in respect to your students and teaching. Based on your own creative work and ongoing engagement with professional theory and practice in the given social context, you are in a position to provide innovative teaching and learning opportunities. You provide guidance in the processes of visual perception, aesthetic analysis and judgement and thus enhance the learners’ visual literacy.
In your studies at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design you enhance and enlarge upon your scientific, artistic and design-related skills and inquire into art and design education as well as artistic research.
In your studies at the FHNW School of Education you learn how to prepare and present artistic and design-related contents on a sound scholarly basis. The skills and knowledge acquired so far flow into self-devised art, design and cultural education projects. In addition you get the chance to expand and elaborate on your acquired skills and knowledge in colloquia and seminars and investigate further aspects of art education and outreach in the context of international block courses and term papers.
Semester 1 and 2 In the first two semesters you enhance and enlarge upon your knowledge and skills in educational science, the methodology of teaching and the teaching practice.
Semesters 3 and 4 In view of your future work in outreach and education, which requires both reflection and far-sightedness, you interweave your knowledge of theory with your practical skills. The focus is on the upcoming Master Thesis.
The Master Thesis You decide on the topic of your Master Thesis yourself; it involves a project in either art, design, theory or visual education. The research method depends on the subject you choose for your project; however, the emphasis should be on research in art and art education. The thesis provides space to develop and enhance your mode of thought and action in your specific fields of study. In your MA thesis you tie in your position in the specialist discourse and with regard to art and design education to your specific interests in the theory and practice of art and design.
Network module Art Education
Every semester we organize a week-long network event in cooperation with four Swiss German art universities. The objective is to review and discuss the ongoing practice, research and theoretical developments in the field of art education.
Graduates of the MA programme are qualified to work as teachers in a wide range of schools or as educators in cultural institutions or other extracurricular institutions. They are also qualified to take up advanced research-oriented work at a university or a similar educational institution.
With its studios and central Campus.Workshops, HGK offers ideal conditions for combining craft curiosity, the acquisition of technical skills, and the necessary digital know-how. In addition, all students have their own 24/7 workspace in one of the spacious studios. At the Institute’s Learning Lab Arts and Design students test, document, and explore creative processes and the design of knowledge and experience spaces digitally and analogue in workshops, studios, and seminars. The facilities are open to students 365 days a year.
