Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

We are the FHNW's competence centre for mathematics and physics.

Every engineering and computer science activity is based on basic competences in mathematics and physics. Our main tasks include teaching these key areas of knowledge in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes at the School of Engineering and Environment and at the School of Computer Science.

We offer preparatory courses for students interested in studying computer science or engineering, which make it easier for them to get started at the FHNW and contribute to their academic success.

In addition, we solve problems for industry, business and society in research and service projects. This is also done in co-operation with other FHNW institutes and their own research activities.

Education in engineering and computer science studies

Our chief mission is to train students in mathematics and the natural sciences – the foundation of all engineering professions. We constantly advance our teaching methodology and develop current, vivid and sophisticated teaching matter so as to provide engineering students with the basics on which to build their studies and indeed their entire professional career.

Preparatory courses for engineering and computer science degree programmes

We offer a various basic review courses to prepare for a degree programme.

Applied research and development with industrial partners

In addition to teaching we are also involved in applied research and development projects, collaborating closely with other FHNW institutes. Here we take on specific assignments in the areas of mathematics, statistics and natural sciences.

      Courses and conferences

Our lecturers offer subject-specific and methodological continuing education courses for teachers. We also sometimes organise lectures for members of the general public with the aim of bringing the fascination of mathematics to life.

We regularly appear at the TecDays organised by the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences SATW, for example.

At subject-specific conferences we engage in dialogue with vocational training schools: by keeping in touch with the diverse developments at the interface between vocational training and university from both perspectives, we contribute to providing optimum support for students as they commence their studies. We are also involved as experts in university entrance diploma examinations.

      Development of young talent

It is important to us to arouse interest in the natural sciences among young people and to foster the essential skills at an early age, especially in the areas of maths and physics. We offer activities and conferences that address various aspects of talent development in both students and teachers – for example participation in international mathematics and logic competitions.

      You're supported

Our mathematics team is at your disposal for all kinds of math problems. The best way to solve math problems is to come to the Math Centre. The Physics department is involved in applied research and development projects with industrial partners.
