Course description

Explore the key elements of conflict resolution theory, negotiation theory, trust theory and cognitive bias relating to conflict management. Systematically analyse conflict resolution cases and examples. Evaluate contributing factors to the conflict including considering structural, institutional, interpersonal and cultural factors. Develop appropriate conflict management strategies for specific conflict cases and scenarios. Produce a descriptive conflict management case study as a video or online presentation and a written analysis of a case.

Good to know

The coil project is embedded in the Conflict Management module within the BSc International Business Management (trinational) programme at the FHNW School of Business and the Global Business Environment module at Sheridan College Pilon School of Business. The project is an intensive two-week programme totalling approx. 16 hours per of synchronous and asynchronous interaction.

 

Collaborative Activities

COIL Project: The Northwest Passage Geopolitical and Socioeconomic Impacts

Research Focus Areas

Teams of students from the two participating institutions analyse the Northwest Passage situation from

multiple perspectives, including:

  • Canadian interests (strategic interests, economic interests etc.)
  • Indigenous communities' perspectives
  • Geopolitical considerations (China/Russia/USA)
  • European interests (economic, strategic etc.)
  • Environmental impacts
  • Socioeconomic implications
 

Reflection Activities

  • Cross-cultural learning experiences
  • Project insights, learnings and challenges
  • Personal and professional growth

The project runs both synchronously and asynchronously utilising unified communication and collaboration platforms such as MS Teams, Google Workspace or similar.
