We are the Competence Center for Engineers and Computer Scientists in Communication, English, Business Administration and Societal Topics
Teaching
We teach bachelor’s and master’s students across all degree programs in communication, English, business administration, and socially relevant topics. Successful professionals in engineering and computer science must be able to communicate effectively with different audiences. In addition to strong language skills, this requires an understanding of socio-political developments as well as sound business knowledge.
Business Administration
To ensure that engineers and computer scientists can assess their work within an economic context, we provide students with fundamental knowledge of business administration. Key topics include cost accounting, investment appraisal, marketing, financial accounting, reporting, corporate management, and organizational structures and processes within companies.
Communication
In both engineering and computer science, professionals are required to argue in a technically sound manner, communicate effectively with different audiences, and apply professional communication principles specific to their field.
For this reason, the bachelor’s program covers argumentation and rhetoric, standards of academic writing, and conventions for professional texts, such as technical reports.
English
English is an integral part of the professional lives of engineers and computer scientists. We develop students’ general and subject-specific communication skills so that they can express themselves appropriately in English, both orally and in writing.
Our teaching addresses study- and career-relevant text types, such as project reports and presentations, as well as the specific characteristics of English-language texts.
Humanities and Social Sciences
The FHNW School of Engineering and Environment and the FHNW School of Computer Science place great importance on a holistic perspective and way of thinking.
Students from all degree programmes therefore benefit from a broad range of courses in culture and history, society, economics and law, as well as ethics, ecology, and sustainability.
Projects
We design teaching formats and facilitate dialogue and transformation processes in interdisciplinary research and development projects addressing complex, technology-driven challenges. We connect different stakeholder groups and enable access to knowledge that goes beyond individual disciplines.
Events
We address pressing scientific, societal, and environmental issues. Through public lecture series, panel discussions, and conferences, we foster dialogue with policymakers, industry, and society both within and beyond the region.
