High Voltage Engineering, FHNW School of Engineering and Environment

School of Engineering and Environment

With our expertise in high voltage engineering, we support you in the development of new insulation materials, the condition assessment of existing electrical equipment, and in addressing technical challenges in your high-voltage laboratories on site.

In the course of the energy transition, high voltage engineering is also undergoing significant change. This includes, for example, the replacement of established insulating materials with sustainable and climate-friendly alternatives, as well as the paradigm shift in power transmission from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). This transition requires the development of new components such as high-voltage cables and circuit breakers.

We support our partners in addressing these challenges through research and service projects, from fundamental studies to practical implementation.

Our focus areas

Development and Analysis of New Insulation Materials

  • Studies on the replacement of existing insulation materials
  • Experimental investigations of new materials, e.g., breakdown voltage characteristics
  • Simulations and electric field calculations for various configurations

Diagnostics of Electrical Equipment

  • Condition assessment based on online and offline measurements
  • Development of maintenance and replacement strategies
  • Use of artificial intelligence to support diagnostics of electrical equipment

Services

We provide comprehensive measurement and testing services in high voltage engineering:

High Voltage Testing

  • Up to 100 kV AC voltage
  • Up to 250 kV DC or impulse voltage

Electrical Diagnostic Measurements

  • Partial discharge measurements
  • Capacitance and dissipation factor measurements
  • Insulation resistance measurements

On-Site Laboratory Support

  • Analysis and troubleshooting of measurement issues
  • Support in resolving background noise problems in partial discharge measurements
