The FHNW Foundry Center is the scientific point of contact for the foundry industry.
Development and service from a single source
The Foundry Center is managed by proven experts with many years of experience in research and production and brings together the diverse foundry-related expertise and resources of the University of Applied Sciences. We are consistently dedicated to meeting industry-specific requirements. The range of cooperation opportunities extends from classic foundry and melting technology to modern rapid prototyping and numerical simulation of casting processes.
Skills
Casting and melting technology, casting laboratory
We develop and optimize processes in the field of casting and melting technology for our partners and customers in the foundry industry. Our casting laboratory enables instrumented test castings in sand and permanent mold casting. A 50 kW induction crucible furnace serves as a melting unit for alloys based on iron, aluminum, and copper, for example.
Numerical simulation
We use Flow-3D to simulate and optimize casting processes. We also have access to other programs such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, and Flowmaster to perform manufacturing and strength calculations.
Materials development and metallography
Our experienced materials engineers will help you analyze your materials in detail and develop them further. Our well-equipped metallography laboratory provides the necessary basis for this.
Material and component testing
Our light and electron microscopy, EDX analysis, and spark emission spectrometry enable a wide range of material testing. Equipment for tensile and hardness testing as well as differential thermal analysis round out the range of services.
