Options
There are various ways to gain international experience:
- Exchange semester
You can spend up to two semesters at one of our partner universities abroad. - Thesis
Write your thesis at a university or at a company abroad. - Double Master's degree
Selected Master's students can obtain a double degree in Linköping (Sweden), Prague or Bologna – ideal if you are aiming for a doctorate -> Learn more about the Double Degree Programme. - FHNW International Student Projects
From the third semester on, you can apply for FHNW student projects in China, India, the USA or Asia. - Paid internship
Through IAESTE you have the opportunity to do an internship abroad.
We will keep you informed of suitable opportunities and invite you to information events.
Requirements
To ensure that your stay abroad is a success, the following conditions must be met:
- You are enrolled at the FHNW School of Life Sciences.
- You have good academic results.
- You have the necessary language skills.
- The ECTS credits earned abroad are recognised by the HLS.

- a supervisor at the FHNW School of Life Sciences
- a supervisor at the host institution
Planning
- Exchange semester:
Start around one year before your stay, to meet the partner university’s application deadlines. - Thesis abroad:
Contact potential supervisors early.
Financial support
There are various funding options for stays abroad as part of your studies:
- SEMP (Swiss-European Mobility Programme):
SEMP can support stays in Europe and worldwide. You can clarify whether funding is possible (and in what form) as part of your application. - Further funding opportunities:
Depending on the destination, type of stay and personal situation, additional financing options may be available. You can find an overview here.
The International Office will be happy to assist you with any questions you have about funding.
Procedure
- Decide:
Choose a country and university. - Clarify:
Find out about the programme, application deadlines, language of instruction, admission requirements and costs. - Consult:
Talk to your head of programme about:
- The best time to go
- Course selection and ECTS
- Language requirements
- For theses: topic and supervision - Inform:
Contact the International Office with your head of programme’s consent. - Apply:
We will nominate you to the host university and provide you with the necessary documents. - Prepare:
- Fill out the documents and have them signed
- Organise insurance, visa, accommodation, vaccinations and other practical steps
- Inform the student administration - After your stay:
- Submit final report and experience report
- Upload transcript of records to Mobility Online
