Over the past few years, Dr. Britta Steffens’ research at the University Children’s Hospital Basel (UKBB) has focused on quantitative approaches to support clinical decision-making. Starting with clinical practice questions, she uses patient data to develop and evaluate mathematical models which can inform therapeutic decisions. Integrated into digital decision-support tools, these models can contribute to better patient care.
Dr. Steffens will illustrate this using paediatric case studies, especially thyroid disease management. She will discuss the potential of mathematical modelling and digital solutions in clinical decision-making, and highlight issues along the way. These challenges include usability, integration in clinical routines, and applicability in international patient populations and heterogeneous healthcare settings, particularly regarding differences in laboratory assays and medication management.
