In 2026, Daria Fovini completed her research stay at the University of Queensland in Australia, gaining invaluable academic insights while fully immersing himself in the local research and student life.

  • Story

What made you decide to go abroad?
I really wanted to gain new experiences abroad, see what universities are like in a different part of the world, and take the opportunity to travel outside of Europe

Why did you choose your host institution/country?
The opportunity came about through a contact of my professor, who facilitated the exchange. Beyond that, I deliberately chose a destination outside of Europe, as traveling within the continent is relatively straightforward. I was particularly drawn to the prospect of studying on another continent in a tropical climate at a larger institution. It offered advanced research facilities and hands-on access to a cleanroom for learning new processes, an infrastructure we lack at my home institution.

What does a typical day at the host institution look like?
I would take the shuttle bus to Lonza between 8 and 9 a.m. Once there, I would usually go to the office first to get ready for the day. After that, my day typically alternated between the lab, the office, and various meetings to discuss next steps. In the lab, I mainly worked on my own project, so I was able to work quite independently and on my own terms. In the office, I primarily analysed data and planned experiments. Of course, there were also plenty of opportunities throughout the day to take short breaks with my coworkers.

Tell us about your research during your residency.
My work focused on the cleanroom microfabrication, physical characterization, and hydrodynamic validation of asymmetric interdigital electrode arrays for alternating-current electrohydrodynamic (AC-EHD) microfluidic platforms. The overarching objective was to establish a highly reproducible fabrication and packaging workflow and evaluate how microelectrode topography and thin-film quality influence localized electrokinetic fluid actuation and microparticle manipulation for biosensing applications.

What surprised you the most about your stay abroad?
Before gaining access to the equipment, I had to complete numerous safety reports and inductions. Outside of the lab, I was really struck by how friendly, open, and active Australians are—everyone seems to have a passion for sports and fitness!

What tips would you give to future exchange students?
Overall, my advice is to take the initiative. It isn't just appreciated, it actually drives your project forward! For example, it took quite a long time for my visa to get approved and to complete all the mandatory safety reports and inductions required to access the equipment. Therefore, start your visa application as soon as possible, and don’t be afraid to push for deadlines or ask to expedite the process

Are there any special experiences or memorable moments you would like to share?
"Working in the cleanroom was an unforgettable experience since I had never done it before and all the processes were completely new to me. I felt incredibly proud when I successfully fabricated an electrode completely from scratch.

Outside of the lab, one of my absolute favorite memories was a trip with friends to look at the breathtaking night sky of the Southern Hemisphere. Looking back, I will always hold my friends there in very warm memory—they truly made the time special.
