Diversity and stylistic breadth in teaching and research set us apart. Our internationally renowned lecturers challenge and encourage our students both in their instrumental/vocal skills and in sharpening their individual artistic profiles. The courses at the Institute range from audio design to solo performance; from stage and movement to choral conducting or open creation, from music education to (new) music theory. We offer our students sources of inspiration and opportunities for networking within the community.
Diversity from bachelor's to specialised master's degrees
Around 120 lecturers and 400 students from all over the world form an inspired community on the campus of the Basel Academy of Music. The Institut Klassik works closely with the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the Jazz Institute and the Music School. This proximity provides insights beyond the chosen field of study and opportunities for exchange with experts from related disciplines.

Projects
The programme is characterised by a variety of projects involving diverse players from the vibrant music scene in and around Basel. Students form over 200 chamber music groups and attend choir, orchestra and ensemble classes in various formations.
Chamber music is an essential part of the core curricula of the Academy’s undergraduate and graduate degree programmes, and is the subject of the Graduate Course for String Quartets (Walter Levin Chair), an advanced training programme aimed at highly experienced professional ensemble musicians. Students are also able to hone their ensemble playing skills with the Chamber Academy Basel orchestra, which plays without a conductor.

Collaborations
Valuable Collaborations with Theater Basel, Gare du Nord, Kammerorchester and Sinfonieorchester Basel, the Phoenix Ensemble and others broaden horizons. Collaboration with the University of Basel provides access to specialised master's and doctoral programmes.
The collaboration with the institutes of the Basel Academy of Music – the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the Jazz Institute and also with the Music School on the Campus – has a formative influence on everyday teaching and learning. The Institut Klassik is also strongly networked beyond the campus boundaries with other universities, concert organisers and cultural institutions at national and international level, such as:
Master classes
In addition to our regular courses, we are able to offer a series of masterclasses with internationally renowned artists thanks to the support of various foundations and private individuals. These masterclasses are unique highlights for our students, providing them with new experiences that complement and enrich their main subject studies. The master classes are generally open to the public, and guest students are also welcome (no registration required). Depending on the instrument and program, the courses last between one and four days.
