Three Institutes, three cultural spaces
Offerings – Management – Lecturers – Events
The Basel Academy of Music consists of three institutes. All the degree programmes, research and continuing education are anchored there.
Our Institutes
What to study at which institute?
Institut Klassik offers a wide range of courses: audio design is just as firmly established here as contemporary music; “Schulmusik” and music and movement courses are just as popular as the master’s degree in solo performance.
Schola Cantorum Basiliensis teaches in the tradition of historical performance practice, with a focus on the Middle Ages/Renaissance and Renaissance/Romantic periods.
Institut Jazz offers a broad stylistic repertoire. The canon of jazz tradition forms the basis for the further development of improvisational expression; composition and production are also given high priority.

For instruments that are established in their modern form (violin, violoncello, fortepiano, trom-bone, flute, etc.), it is assumed that pedagogical instruction will be completed as part of a previous course of study in these modern forms at the Institut Klassik.
Early Music Theory
The content of the MA programme – with optional specialisations – ranges from the earliest examples of polyphonic European music to the period around 1850.
