Practice-led exploration of Early Music

teaser_menzel_teaser-1659.jpg

The work of the Research Department focuses principally on two areas: music from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, and historical music practice. Research looks at both the technical aspects (notation, repertoires, conventions etc.) and the application of historical music practices in a present-day setting, with particular weight given to the critical examination of the role of primary sources in the performance of Early Music. We use and share our findings in a variety of ways: academic publications, presentations at symposia and conferences, concerts and recordings.

We have a permanent team of researchers, who are supported by scholars working on specific project. Their work helps to inform the teaching and concert activities of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.

Basel Contributions to Historical Music Practice – BBHM

As a teaching and research institute, the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis FHNW cultivates scholarly engagement with all areas of historical music practice. Since 1977, this research has been documented in a series of publications (Basler Jahrbuch für Historische Musikpraxis). Since 2019, the series has been continued under the title Basler Beiträge zur Historischen Musikpraxis. Each volume presents key topics from the annual symposia of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, occasionally supplemented by independent contributions.

Basel Yearbook for Historical Music Practice – BJbHM

As a teaching and research institute, the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis FHNW cultivates scholarly engagement with all areas of historical music practice. The results of this engagement were published from 1977 to 2018 in the series «Basler Jahrbuch für Historische Musikpraxis» (Basel Yearbook for Historical Music Practice). Each volume presents a topic related to the annual symposia of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. All contributions are freely accessible via E-Periodica.

This series will continue under a new title from 2019 onwards. See «Basler Beiträge zur Historischen Musikpraxis».

Schola Cantorum Basiliensis Scripta – SCBS

Since its foundation in 1933, the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis has been engaged in research into historical music practice as a teaching and research institute. The series ‘Schola Cantorum Basiliensis Scripta’ presents current topics and research findings primarily in monographic form, covering a broad spectrum of issues and modes of presentation. The publications are intended to reach not only specialists, but also students and interested individuals outside the narrower boundaries of the discipline, thereby encouraging a deeper engagement with the diversity of early music.

Audio-Recordings

At the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (SCB), researchers and musicians work closely together. Their practice-oriented collaborations create a dynamic interplay between research, education, concerts and publications. The decisive factor is the approach of understanding music in its historical context and interpreting it in relation to the present, combined with a curiosity about the as yet undiscovered. The CD productions help to make important projects or members of the SCB known to a wider audience. Since 1980, the SCB has produced over 75 recordings on various labels. Since 2010, our CD productions have been released on the GLOSSA label.
