In the Lightweight and Composite Lab, fibre-reinforced materials are developed, characterised and tested through to prototypes.

Our offer

We offer our students, research partners and industrial clients the development and characterisation of materials in the context of sustainable lightweight construction, the development of their processes, the production of prototypes and their testing.

Infrastructure

  • Resin and laminating room
  • Cutting plotter for fabrics and films
  • Labcoater for the production of resin films and prepreg
  • RTM and resin infusion technology
  • Various ovens incl. IR oven
  • Autoclave 7.2 bar, +200 °C, 5100 l
  • Winding system for thermosetting resins and thermoplastics
  • Various heating presses up to 200 t (2000 kN)
  • Various 3D printers SLA, FFF, SLS, EDAM, 9Tlabs for fiber-reinforced materials
  • Industrial robots for various automation tasks such as additive manufacturing EDAM and ultrasonic welding
  • Joining using adhesive bonding, ultrasonic welding systems and resistance welding
  • Test panel production and specimen preparation using precision saws/water jet cutting
  • Universal testing machine Zwick, 100 kN for tensile tests, compression tests, shear tests, DCB, CAI, peel tests, lap shear, ILLS, open hole tension, Arcan, shear frames, bending stiffness of textiles and shear tests using shear frames.
  • Ultrasonic testing and impact test bench up to 40 J
  • Component measurement and analysis of fiber orientation measurement using Hexagon Vision System
  • Fourné melt spinning system 3 kg/h, 350 °C
  • Single fiber tensiometer and single fiber pull-out Fima test, fiber length measurement
  • Online process monitoring using Optimould/degree of hardness measurement, fiber optics
  • Permeability test benches in-plane & out-of-plane
Research and development of sustainable composite and lightweight construction solutions along the entire value chain of material, process, component, recycling and end of life.
