Prof. Dr. Thomas Villiger promotes international study stays for our students.

  • Story

International research stays are a valuable experience – not just for students but also for supervisors at the FHNW School of Life Sciences (HLS). Prof. Dr. Thomas Villiger, a lecturer in bioprocess engineering, is heavily involved in international project supervision and supports students preparing to go abroad.

“I also spent a semester abroad during my studies, and the experience and connections I made then still shape me today” says Villiger. “It’s great to see how students grow and take on new challenges. These experiences help them tremendously, both academically and personally, and it motivates me to support them on that journey.”

A recent example is Robert Berisha, who is currently gaining valuable hands-on experience through an innovation project at Lonza in Slough (UK) for his MSc thesis. “Doing my thesis abroad in industry gave me the chance to apply my knowledge in a real-world context and gain international experience. It’s a unique opportunity to grow both professionally and personally” says Robert.

Tereza Müllerová also benefited from international collaboration: she came to the HLS through the double-degree MSc programme with the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague and later chose to write her thesis in Villiger’s lab. “I’m very grateful for the chance to study abroad on the double-degree programme. The experience broadened my scientific knowledge and pushed me beyond my comfort zone – both academically and personally” says Tereza.

For Thomas Villiger, working with international students is a real asset: “They bring fresh perspectives, new methods and often innovative solutions that enrich our lab. Intercultural exchange pushes teamwork and creativity, enhancing the lab’s overall dynamic.” At the same time, international collaboration opens new avenues for partnerships and strengthens the university’s academic network.

A research stay abroad is a unique opportunity to grow – both professionally and personally. If you’re curious and open to new perspectives, whether in your studies or daily life, you’ll enrich your life in countless ways.
Prof. Dr. Thomas Villiger
