The importance of global networks and intercultural experiences for science and education, FHNW School of Life Sciences

In a globalized world, the importance of international networking and international experience for scientists cannot be underestimated. Professor Daniel Varón, who runs the Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry working group and is head of the Chemistry BSc programme at the FHNW School of Life Sciences, emphasizes the relevance of these aspects for his career and for students' development.

Varón started building international contacts during his time at the Max-Planck-Institute in Potsdam, Germany. Through conferences, guest lectures and exchanges with colleagues from all over the world, he expanded his network and gained insights into a range of scientific methodologies and cultures.

For him this global networking is fundamental, as it not only promotes knowledge transfer but also enables collaboration across national and specialisation borders. Thanks to active exchanges with international colleagues, he can draw on a wide range of support, whether in acquiring research funding, reviewing papers or arranging internships for students.

Prof. Varón is particularly keen to promote international experience for students. He is convinced that studying is much more than just learning subject content. Stays abroad open up new perspectives for students' future careers and promote international exchange in science.

Although Varón only gained experience abroad after his studies, he has benefited enormously from it during his career. It not only enabled him to gain an international degree but also gave him access to renowned research institutions and valuable contacts that had a significant influence on his professional development. He wants to make these experiences possible for his students too.
