Master of Arts

Music Pedagogy | instrument / voice | Music and Research

Thinking of choosing a specialisation or Music Pedagogy as a second master’s degree? Why not both? Students who have already completed a master’s degree in Performance, instrument/voice have the opportunity to combine artistic-scientific research with a teaching qualification for their own instrument as part of an MA in Music Pedagogy. This dual profile expands your professional opportunities: Acquiring in-depth research skills through one's own pedagogical-focused research project and simultaneously developing the own practical teaching skills.
Master of Arts

Specialised Performance | Music and Research

Combine artistic practice and research into a unique profile: with the support of committed mentors and peers, carry out your own artistic research project. Whether in preparation for a PhD or as a tool for your artistic work, Music and Research offers space for artistic innovation and reflection.

Career

Professional career

Anne-May Krüger's work is characterised by an extraordinary versatility: As a singer, she is an internationally active interpreter of contemporary music in particular. In addition, she also appears as a librettist and musicologist.
Guest contracts have taken the singer to the Stuttgart State Opera, the Oldenburg State Theater, the Mannheim National Theater and the Theater Basel, among others. She has performed at renowned festivals such as the Lucerne Festival, ENSEMS/Valencia, MaerzMusik (Berlin), Contempuls (Prague), London Ear and Wien Modern. Her work has been documented in CD and radio productions for the WERGO label as well as for SWR, SRF, SR, HR and the BBC. She received essential impulses for her vocal work in her studies at the Opera School of the University of Music Karlsruhe as well as with Rudolf Piernay.

In 2020, she was awarded a doctorate by the University of Basel in cooperation with the Basel Academy of Music with a dissertation funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The monograph Musik über Stimmen. Vokalinterpretinnen und -interpreten der 1950er und 60er Jahre im Fokus hybrider Forschung was published by Wolke Verlag in 2022. She has also published in Dissonance, Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, PFAU, Wißner, Brepols Publishers, and Laaber-Verlag, among others.

Anne-May’s first libretto, Die Katze, die ihre eigenen Wege ging (after Rudyard Kipling’s short story The Cat that Walked by Himself), premiered in 2021 in Mike Svoboda's setting at the Landestheater Linz. Her latest libretto for Mike Svoboda’s opera Adam und Eva, based on Peter Hacks' comedy of the same name, was commissioned for the Schwetzinger Festspiele 2025.

From 2011-21, Anne-May Krüger was a research assistant at the Basel Academy of Music, where she supervised the research focus "Performance Practice of New Music." Since 2018, she has been a lecturer at the Basel Academy of Music and has also been teaching at the University of Basel (Musicological Department) since fall 2020. In her teaching, she likes to work across disciplinary boundaries, approaching theory through practice and vice versa. Her focus lies on the performance practice of music since 1945 as well as research in and through art practice.
