Short biography
David Lichtsteiner is a school musician and composer with extensive pedagogical experience. He studied composition under Erik Oña as well as School Music II at the Basel Academy of Music. His artistic focus encompasses composition, arrangement, and musical direction for concert and theatrical productions. Notable examples include large-scale productions of Tempus fugit at the Burghof in Lörrach and open-air theatre performances of Texte und Töne in Sissach. His orchestral piece Jingrwai Lawbei, written for the Neues Orchester Basel, was documented by SRF and has been revived on multiple occasions, including by the Jena Philharmonic. As a pianist, he also regularly accompanies choirs.
Beyond his artistic pursuits, Lichtsteiner taught music at several grammar schools (Gymnasien) as well as at the PH NMS in Bern. He founded and led the composition workshop of the Neues Orchester Basel for seven years. Since 2021, he has taught modules in music theory, musical creation, and performance at the PH FHNW. He oversees the Northwestern Switzerland School Music Day with over 400 participants and co-directs the CampusChor Muttenz, comprising approximately 80 students, together with Yana Bibb.
As a research associate for the SNF project Gymnasialer Musikunterricht als Spiegel einer praxisbasierten Didaktik (Secondary School Music Education as a Reflection of Practice-Based Didactics), he investigates knowledge structures within secondary school music instruction in German-speaking Switzerland. Most recently, his contribution Fachdidaktik Musik: Wissenschaft oder Praxis? (co-authored with Gabriel Imthurn) appeared in the journal Kontrapunkte (2024).
