Profile
Thomas Villiger joined the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) in August 2019, where he holds a lecturer position in bioprocess technology. At the same, he works 50% as Senior Manufacturing Scientist at Biogen in the large-scale production plant for biopharmaceuticals in Solothurn. His research focuses on the development and optimization of biopharmaceutical processes (peptides, proteins and cellular products) as well as their implementation in production processes, where experimental as well as mathematical models in combination with modern analytical methods are applied to maximize not only the yield but also the desired product quality.
Before joining FHNW, Thomas Villiger worked from 2016-2019 in the monoclonal antibody production facility at Novartis in Huningue (FR). Between 2011 and 2015, he worked in the cell culture process development at Novartis (Basel) and Merck-Serono (Vevey).
Thomas Villiger completed his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering in 2009 and his master's degree in Chemical and Bioengineering in 2010 at ETH Zurich. He carried out his PhD from 2011 to 2015 in the group of Prof. Massimo Morbidelli at the Institute of Chemical and Bioengineering at ETH Zurich.
- 2015 ETH Medal, for outstanding doctoral thesis at ETH Zurich
- 2013 ACTIP Fellowship, from the Animal Cell Technology Industrial Platform
- 2010 Willi-Studer Award, for best graduation in Chemical and Bioengineering at ETH Zurich
