School of Life Sciences

We are part of Europe's largest life sciences cluster. We develop digital, sustainable and health-oriented solutions to societal challenges through practice-oriented education, continued education and applied research.

The FHNW School of Life Sciences, located in Muttenz near Basel, is part of Europe's largest life sciences cluster. In close cooperation with partners from the pharmaceutical, medical technology, chemical, environmental and biotechnology sectors, it trains highly qualified specialists and develops real-world solutions for social and economic challenges. It contributes to the further development of the NW Switzerland life sciences region with practice-oriented education and training, applied research and state of the art infrastructure.

Sensor networks for the city – and what comes next?

Sensors measure air quality, traffic volumes and noise levels, providing cities with valuable real-time data for the present and the future. Yet however advanced this infrastructure may be, it has always faced a problem: many of these small devices rely on disposable batteries or complex wiring. This creates costs, increases maintenance requirements and ultimately generates addi-tional electronic waste.
