Our research activities centre on artistic action in the field of music, and the conditions that frame this process – from creation to performance, through to mediation and reception. Research projects draw directly on teaching content and are carried out together with industry partners and practitioners, often as part of an interdisciplinary team.

The FHNW Academy of Music has two research centres: the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and the Basel School of Music, each of which pursue their own research priorities and traditions.

The Schola Cantorum Basiliensis specialises in practice-based Early Music research, in particular, historical performance practice and organology.

The Basel School of Music Research Department specialises in three fields: Contemporary/New Music, 19th Century Music and Music Pedagogy.
