      FAQ about the Master's programme Medical Informatics

      Are you interested in the Master's programme Medical Informatics at the FHNW and do you have questions about the admission requirements or the study models? Here you will find the answers to the most frequently asked questions.

      What are the criteria for accepting an applicant?

      Please find the criteria on the website, under Admission

      Is there a minimum grade point average (GPA) requirement to apply or to be accepted?

      Minimum achieved grade must be A, B or ≥ 4,8 (≥ good). We will assess your application, including converting your grade during our evaluation process. However, we encourage you to apply even if you do not fulfil this criterion. Your application will be assessed, and you might be offered an interview to clarify possible compensations.

      I have my Bachelor’s degree in Oral and Dental Medicine. Do I qualify for this programme?

      Yes. We accept candidates who have a background in Life Sciences, Programming and Business Informatics.

      I have my Bachelor's degree in Audiology and Speech-Language pathology as well as a Master's in Public Health. Do I qualify for this programme?

      We accept candidates who have a background in Life Sciences, Programming and Business Informatics. However, we encourage you to apply. In the admission process we will review the specific courses and ECTS relating to in Life Sciences.

      How many semesters does it take to study full-time?

      It takes 3 semesters.

      Is it possible to study part-time?

      Yes. The programme can be taken over 5 semesters.

      How high is the workload if the programme is absolved part-time?

      Part-time studying is similar to a 50% work contract.

      How many days per week must I be at the university if the programme is taken part-time?

      Approximately 1.5 days per week are on-site lectures.

      Do you offer online lectures?

      No. We do not offer online lectures generally. Presence in the lectures is mandatory. You need to be based in Switzerland.

      How much are the semester fees for international students?

      The semester fees for international students who do not have their civil residence in the EU/EFTA or Switzerland at the beginning of their studies are CHF 5’000 per semester. If you have your legal residence in the EU/EFTA the semester fees are CHF 1’000.

      When does the semester start and end?

      The autumn semester starts in week 38 and ends in week 7.
      The spring semester starts in week 8 and ends in week 28.

      Can I start the programme in the spring semester?

      No. The programme always starts in autumn.

      What is the deadline for applications?

      The deadline for the application is on the 30th of April.

      When will I be informed about the decision on my application?

      The final decision will be communicated by June.

      When do I receive the confirmation of enrolment?

      The confirmation of enrolment for the autumn semester will be posted at the beginning of the semester by the week 38.

      When will I receive an invoice for the semester fees?

      You will receive the invoice for the semester fees by post by September.

      How many core modules do I need to select for the 1st semester?

      Please find the information on our website.

      Is it possible to add another degree from a partner University?

      It is not possible to have a double degree in the Master of Medical Informatics with any other University.

      Do I have to attend the pre-courses on-site in Muttenz?

      No. Presence is not mandatory.

      Do the pre-courses in Muttenz take place hybrid, i.e. on-site and online at the same time?

      No. Pre-courses will take place either on-site in Muttenz or online. The slides will be available on Moodle. If you do the courses online, you are not bound to the times and dates of the on-site course. All courses must be completed by the end of December.

      Is it possible to repeat the examination of the online pre-course?

      Yes. The examination can be done as often as needed but it has to be done by the end of December.

      Is it possible to contact a student for further information on the programme?

      Yes. At each info event you can talk to a student.
