Career

Professional career

Prof. Dr. Thomas Vetter has been teaching and conducting research at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) since January 2026 as a Professor of Pharmaceutical Process Engineering. He leads a research group in the field of particle engineering, with a focus on crystallization, including crystal chemistry and isolation, as well as spray drying and freeze drying. In his work, process analytical technologies and mathematical modelling are applied at both the molecular and process engineering levels.

Before joining FHNW, he worked both in industry and in academic research and teaching. At the Danish pharmaceutical company Lundbeck A/S in Copenhagen, he was responsible for the research and patenting of crystal forms of new synthetic active pharmaceutical ingredients. In addition, he led the development, optimization, and scale-up of manufacturing processes (crystallization, solid-liquid separation, and drying) that meet the critical quality attributes of such solid forms.

Previously, he served as a professor at the University of Manchester, where he led a research group focusing on industrial and fundamental questions in particle technology and crystal chemistry.

Dr. Vetter completed his studies at ETH Zurich (BSc in Chemical Engineering, MSc in Chemical and Bioengineering, PhD in Process Engineering with a focus on the influence of additives and impurities on crystallization processes, Prof. Dr. Marco Mazzotti). This was followed by research stays at the University of California, Santa Barbara (Prof. Dr. Michael F. Doherty) and at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis.
