Basel Academy of Music


With the CAS Music Performance, trained musicians can expand and deepen their musical skills in a targeted manner. In this modular course, you can set individual priorities over two semesters and thus further develop your practical musical activities according to your wishes.

  • Advance your personal practical music skills with experienced lecturers in one-to-one lessons
  • Individually customized content allows for specialization in repertoire, style, instrument, or specific musical interests, enabling students to set their own priorities.
  • Modular continuing education combines individual lessons, chamber music and elective courses for sustainable artistic development.
  • The programme option for groups Chamber music is available by arrangement (comparable to the MA SP Chamber Music).

Aims and benefits

The certificate course enables trained musicians to expand and deepen their artistic skills. The continuing education programme can be individually tailored and, in consultation with the lecturers, various areas of focus and specialisations are possible: specialisations in repertoire, stylistic or instrument-specific areas of focus, or particular musical interests.

The main instrument is usually taught by one lecturer, but team teaching is possible. Please indicate your preference on the registration form.

Upon agreement, this continuing education programme can also be taken with a chamber music group.

Special
Upon explicit recommendation by the main subject lecturer, participation in master classes is generally possible.

In this continuing education, you will specifically deepen your skills in the following areas:

  • Further development of practical music skills
  • Stylistic specialisation and consolidation

Target audience

Who is the CAS Music Performance course aimed at?

The CAS Music Performance is aimed at certified musicians who wish to expand and deepen their practical musical skills.


Structure and programme contents

The CAS/DAS-programmes at the Basel Academy of Music are based on modules.

The legally binding structure provides an initial guide to the content and weighting of the subjects on the continuing education. Several modules correspond to those in the degree programme.
The detailed content and modalities of the individual subjects can be found in the module descriptions.

The continuing education programme is structured as follows over two semesters:

Chamber music and concert performances

Approximately 300 hours should be allocated for self-study.
The certificate is awarded after successful completion of the diploma examination (public recital).

Requirements, admission, entrance exam

Admission criteria

In order to enter the Certificate of Advanced Studies FHNW in Music Performance programme, applicants must be awarded a master's degree in Music or equivalent as well as they must have passed the entrance exam and were offered a free place at the Academy (limited places). In exceptional cases, the continuing education programme head will decide.

  • Master's degree in music or equivalent degree (in exceptional cases, the continuing education programme head will decide)
  • Motivational letter explaining the reasons for choosing the CAS
  • successful entrance exam

Language Skills

We recommend having sufficient German language skills.

Entrance exam

The entrance exam is individual for each programme.

Dates

Registration
You may apply until 31st May.
Along with the registration, it is mandatory to submit the following documents:

  • a motivational letter
  • Master diploma in Music Pedagogy or Performance (or an equivalent general education qualification)
  • both links to the videos with their belonging list of works

Announcement of the results
The results of the entrance exam will be communicated by mail.

Procedure

The Entrance exam is one video round.

Entrance exam: Video recordings
A video recording must be submitted together with the registration.

Video requirements
Repertoire requirements

  • Each video consists one single work/movement.
  • Each work/movement must be recorded from a fixed camera perspective and without any cuts.
  • The hands and the face of the musician must be visible.
  • It is recommended to use a suitable stereo microphone and place it conveniently.
  • The recordings must not be older than 6 months.
  • Publicly recorded concerts may be submitted as long as they meet the above-mentioned requirements.
