metaLAB (at) Basel: the new research platform at the HGK Basel

In March 2024, the metaLAB (at) Basel was opened at the HGK Basel: an explorative platform for the development of research, teaching and science-with-public formats that promotes transdisciplinary collaboration.

The new metaLAB (at) Basel at the HGK Basel complements the international metaLAB community. Numerous members of the international metaLAB community attended the opening event on 14 March 2024, as the two existing labs in Harvard (2011) and Berlin (2022) will now be joined by Basel (2024).

The metaLAB (at) Basel is HGK Basel's new research platform for transdisciplinary knowledge exchange and practice at the interface of design, art, digital humanities and natural sciences. The metaLAB (at) Basel is a space in which new formats of research and collaboration are developed and prototypes are realised in a community of practice. The metaLAB (at) Basel supports research, teaching and science-to-public formats that promote transdisciplinary, more-than-human collaborations.

Claudia Perren, Director of the HGK Basel, Jeffrey Schnapp, founder of metaLAB (at) Harvard, Harvard University, Kim Albrecht and Annette Jael Lehmann, co-founders of metaLAB (at) Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, and Aylin Yildirim Tschoepe, co-founder of metaLAB (at) Basel, HGK Basel, introduced themselves and presented their lines of research. Current projects focussing on more-than-human approaches and critical AI projects were presented at two panels.

The launch of metaLAB (at) Basel would not have been possible without the support of the metaLAB community, the research and working group members of metaLAB (at) Basel, the students and the local partners HEK (Haus der elektronischen Künste), Museum der Kulturen Basel, Open House Basel and the Graduate School of Social Sciences (G3S) of the University of Basel.
