Woodworking, Basel Academy of Art and Design

Basel Academy of Art and Design

In our wood workshop solid woods as well as various panel materials can be processed. Diligent modelling and working with a lathe is just as possible as rough carpentry work. For this we rely on highly professional machinery and the sound advice of our woodworking team.

Techniques / machinery

Sawing

Circular saw
Precise cutting of solid woods and wood-based materials

Panel saw (Striebig)
With the aid of the panel saw we cut large panel material down to size.

Chop saw
The chop saw is used mainly to cut battens and beams to the right length. It can also produce angle cuts.

Belt saw
With the aid of the belt saw we can execute simple curved, upright, as well as stepped cuts.

Milling

Router
For milling grooves, for chamfering and profiling, for template milling and freehand milling

Semi-stationary router
In the case of the semi-stationary router, the router is mounted firmly under the worktable. This means that smaller profile milling jobs can be carried out safely.

Moulder
Precise profiles and chamfers are produced with the aid of various form cutters.

Pressing

Frame press
Solid wooden boards and edges are glued on the upright press. It is also suitable for free forms and curves.

Vacuum press
Special shapes can also be laminated with the vacuum table.

Veneer press
Larger surfaces can be glued with our old veneer press. Experimenting by pressing different materials is also possible.

Turning

Rotationally symmetrical bodies made of wood or plastic are produced on the lathe.

Grinding

We use these grinders for special sanding work.

Wide belt grinder
We use the wide belt grinder for sanding the surfaces of solid wood and panel material.

Edge grinding machine
Sanding at right angles and sanding edges is child's play on the edge grinding machine.

Plate grinding machine

Model grinding machine

Cylindrical grinding machine

Planing

Surface planer
To straighten a warped board of solid wood, we need a surface and a thickness planer.

Drilling

Radial drill & Box column drill
The box column drill allows you to carry out precise and angular drillings. One of the features of the radial drill is its wide sweep. Angle porting and blind holes are also possible.

Slot mortising machine
The slot mortising machine is used to drill horizontal oblong holes, holes in the sides of workpieces, or holes with equal spacing (dowel holes).

Hand-guided machines

Workstations

The most frequently used machines at our flexible workstations are permanently mounted and directed connected to the vacuum cleaner. Other hand-held machines can be easily connected to our workplace power module.

In addition, we have a wide range of hand-held machines:
For example:

  • chain saw
  • carver for carving work
  • edge milling machine
  • Domino by Festool
  • Clamex Lamello
  • Various specialist grinders
  • Hand-held circular saws
  • etc.
