Doctoral positions within research projects that receive funding are posted on the FHNW’s central job board. There is also the option to pursue a doctoral degree without funding through the Make/Sense PhD program, which is conducted in cooperation with the University of Art and Design Linz.

The Make/Sense PhD program, hosted at the Critical Media Lab, brings together researchers from the fields of art, design, media, and technology who conduct critical, practice-based investigations into the social, political, and infrastructural conditions of media and technological practices. The three-year program offers a collaborative environment with individual mentoring in Basel and Linz, monthly colloquia, an annual meeting, and public events with external partners. Collaborative research methods such as documenting, rehearsing, hacking, and publishing support the development of independent projects, the results of which may include exhibitions, performances, installations, or publications.
