Interpersonal Communication

Zielsetzung / Purpose
Students will be able - to acquire knowledge of the terminology and key concepts of interpersonal communication studies - to apply such terminology and concepts when communicating (listening and speaking) - to examine personal messages and those of others - to recognise and distinguish the basic differences between sending and receiving messages and the effects those messages may have - to accept misunderstandings as a normal feature of communication to produce more varied and concise messages and to perceive other messages more clearly.

Terminology and selected models of and approaches to interpersonal communication: - Shannon/Weaver (and followers) model of communication - Watzlawick's Axioms - Schulz von Thun's Four Sides of a Message - Grice's Conversational Maxims - Principles of Effective Listening - (Mini) Case Analyses

This course examines in form of group presentations. Most students will have some experience in presenting, if only in their mother tongue. Professional presentation skills are taught and refined during the subsequent semester and will not be explicitly assessed here.
