Sustainable Power Systems
The module provides in-depth knowledge of the current structures and technologies in energy supply (especially electricity) and their development prospects in terms of sustainability and efficiency.
- Importance of energy: statistics, global context, Swiss context
- Generation of electrical energy: power plants, components
- Energy storage: demand and applications
- Electricity grids (structure): Interconnected grids, regulation, grid levels
- Electricity grids (components): Lines, transformers, substations
- IT and energy technology: smart metering, smart grid
Students know and understand the processes and conversion stages that take place in electrical energy supply, from primary energy to final electrical energy. They can carry out simple quantitative calculations and classify new developments. They will be able to explain the relevant facts to non-expert decision-makers in an understandable way, as well as follow the discussions of specialized experts and, if necessary, delve deeper into the field.
