As part of the current Lecture Series of the Institute Digital Communication Environments’ (IDCE) on the theme of ‘Return’, Japanese designer Taku Okamoto, a graduate of the IDCE’s Master’s programme, gave a talk followed by a tea ceremony.
As part of the current Lecture Series on the theme of ‘Return’ organised by the Institute Digital Communication Environments (IDCE) at HGK Basel, Japanese designer and tea master Taku Okamoto, a graduate of the Master’s programme in Digital Communication Environments at IDCE, HGK Basel, gave a lecture followed by a tea ceremony on 9 March 2026.
Taku Okamoto was born in Kanazawa, Japan, and completed a Master’s degree at the IDCE at HGK Basel. After working in Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Tokyo in the fields of design and design consultancy, he moved to Kyoto and founded the company Oboro, which offers mindful tea ceremonies.
Thanks to his many years of experience as a tea master, Taku Okamoto creates experiences that combine Japanese cultural heritage with a contemporary perspective on well-being. Today, he is an internationally sought-after tea master for mindful tea ceremonies. Taku Okamoto returned to HGK Basel as part of a two-week tour of Europe to give his talk.
For the current Lecture Series ‘Return’, the Institute of Digital Communication Environments (IDCE) has invited seven alumni to return to HGK Basel to speak about their professional development since graduating from the IDCE’s Bachelor’s, Master’s or International Master of Design programmes.
The speakers, who work internationally in a wide variety of fields – ranging from professional practice and research to academia and curatorial work – will offer fascinating insights into their career paths and experiences since graduating from the HGK Basel as part of this lecture series.
