Field of Activity

Sandra Bischler-Hartmann conducts research at the IDCE as part of the Swiss National Science Foundation-funded project WYSIWYG – an investigation in the uptake of graphic design software in Switzerland and France, 1980 – today on the introduction of computers into graphic design and visual communication education from the 1980s onwards. In addition to research, her activities include teaching the History of Design and the organization and conceptionalization of events and exhibitions.

Biography

Sandra Bischler-Hartmann is a design historian and communication designer (MA in Art and Design Science, 2015). After a traineeship as a curatorial assistant at the Zurich Museum für Gestaltung, the Swiss museum for design and visual communication, she worked on her thesis and was involved in the research project Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited from 2016 till 2020. Since 2020, she has been a Research Associate at IDCE and handles the scientific support of the institute archive and the Basel Design History Lab. Since 2024, she has been conducting research as part of the project WYSIWYG – an investigation in the uptake of graphic design software in Switzerland and France, 1980 – today, a collaboration with HEAD Genève. She also is a lecturer in the History of Design (at HKB, Folkwang University of the Arts Essen, HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd, and others) and works as an author and curator, most recently for Rid the Grid – Women in Swiss Graphic Design 1900–1980 at the Basel Poster Collection.
