How do you speak about your art - and through it? This programme invites you to deepen your artistic practice by connecting making with thinking. Through reflection, dialogue, and critical engagement, you explore your own position as an artist and expand your capacity to act, communicate, and contextualize in contemporary cultural settings.

  • Strengthen your artistic voice through reflective practice. You explore and articulate your own artistic position across disciplines, media, and methods.
  • Engage with contemporary artistic discourse. Through seminars, lectures, and dialogue, you critically connect your practice to current cultural and theoretical debates.

With the CAS «Artistic Literacy» participants are introduced to artistic, design-led, communicative educational strategies. They acquire the ability to make creative methods effective for social processes. The topics offered integrate methods from the fields of communication, digitality, fine arts, design, art education and participatory practices. The courses may be combined to form an individual continuing education program according to the participant’s goals. The CAS «Artistic Literacy» is taught by experienced international arts and design professionals, experienced educators, established artists, and lecturers from HGK Basel FHNW.


Aims and benefits

Participants gain reflective experience with their own artistic modes of expression and acquire the ability to shape communicative, artistic and design processes. They acquire skills for a competent handling of diverse analog and digital methods of art, culture and design education as well as their application in social and cultural practices. The participants learn how to initiate discussions about design processes in diverse social contexts through artistic, educational, and communicative strategies. They deepen their knowledge of diverse communicative and digital competencies and acquire know-how in networking with various target groups. Participants practice integrating their artistic and cultural processes as open, experimental participatory work.


Target audience

No prior artistic or technical knowledge is required. All people working in educational, artistic, cultural and communicative contexts are welcome: Teachers, mediators, social workers, cultural mediators, communication experts, FAGE, coaches, team builders, people interested in art, design, museums and culture, etc.


Structure and programme contents

Assemble your personal CAS continuing education from our current workshop modules.
The goal is to earn 10 ECTS over workshop weeks of 2 ECTS each, or half-week workshops of 1 ECTS each. Your chosen workshops are followed by the final module with an integrated certificate thesis about an individual project worth 5 ECTS credits. The final module includes five individual 90-minute coaching sessions. Successful completion of the final module leads to the Certificate of Advanced Studies CAS HGK FHNW «Artistic Literacy».

For the CAS Artistic Literacy, the Institute Arts and Design Education cooperates with the House of Electric Arts Basel, the University of Social Work FHNW, Monte Verità and Digital Identities.

The Multispecies Spaces Lab test new practices that transform our relationship with the planet. The 7-day intensive course, a 5-day course followed by a 2-day exhibition program, establishes a practice-oriented laboratory that mobilizes the interdisciplinary capacities of architecture and art.

Er bietet praxisorientierte Werkzeuge zur inklusiveren Gestaltung von Kommunikations- und Publikationsprozessen.

Grounded Transformation: Gestaltung als Prozess des Wandels

Die Vorlesung «Grounded Transformation» richtet sich an Menschen aus Design, Medien, Kunst, Kultur und Aktivismus, die Gestaltung als Werkzeug für Wandel einsetzen möchten. Die Reihe verbindet Theorie und Praxis in konkreten sozialen, politischen und ökologischen Kontexten.

What makes a poster unforgettable? In this workshop, participants learn how to transform a clear idea into a visually compelling poster. They work with color, form, and typography to convey content concisely and develop a unique design style.

In Berlin, Erik Spiekermann and three other designers will introduce us to the basics of letterpress printing and typography. In a joint project in their unique letterpress workshop p98a, we will utilize the potential of historical techniques and digital approaches.

Tender Computing is a concept and workpractice that explores a soft, experimental and playful way of Physical Computing, which means the creative design of interactive objects and spaces. Creative Coding

In this continuing education module, visual designers learn the fundamentals of generative design and creative coding. In a live coding environment, they develop algorithmically generated forms and typography, experiment with animation, interaction, and audio-reactive visualizations, and design their own digital tools for visual communication.

Inquiry by Design

Visual communication plays a central role in shaping the images we encounter in daily life. Since the design of images is always an interpretation of the world by the designer, visual messages inevitably influence the perception of the beholder. In today’s world of digital communication channels, understanding how images are perceived, both in their visual appearance and the media through which they are disseminated, is essential for creating and sharing them consciously and responsibly.

Type Design - Variable Font

How do letterforms shape the way we read and feel? In this module, you dive into the fundamentals of type design — from sketch to digital font. You explore the aesthetics, structure, and rhythm of typography while developing your own typeface through guided practice and critical reflection.

CAS Artistic Literacy

Final module with integrated certificate thesis

After successful completion of a total of 10 ECTS via participation in modules/workshops of 1–2 ECTS each from the continuing education program of the HGK Basel, it is possible to participate in an individual six-month final module with integrated certificate thesis worth 5 ECTS. This final module supports the participants in their individual artistic and creative mediation projects or in their cultural practice. Prof. Dr. Dorothée King and her team are available as mentors for five individual coaching sessions.

With this, participants achieve a total of 15 ECTS credits and receive the Certificate of Advanced Studies CAS «Artistic Literacy» of the Institute Arts and Design Education (IADE) of the HGK Basel FHNW.

The CAS programme is open to persons with a university entrance qualification.

Booking during a workshop season:
