Biography

After completing her Bachelor's degree in Textile Technology (2016, Albstadt, DE), Sophie Kellner completed her Master's degree in Fashion and Integrative Design at the Masterstudio Design of HGK Basel, graduating in 2018. For the research project Paradigms of Ubiquitous Computing at the Institute of Experimental Design and Media Cultures of HGK Basel, she developed a room-filling interactive installation (2019-2022). In parallel, she was already teaching in the Co-Create pro-gramme of HGK Basel. Since 2022, she has been teaching Physical Computing and Soft Circuits in the BA degree pro-gramme and CoCreate and the MA programme.

In addition to assignments as a costume designer at Theater Basel, Neues Theater Dornach (CH) and for independent projects, she now realizes her own spatial productions and teaches physical computing and electronic textiles in work-shops at institutions such as HeK (House of Electronic Arts), Vitra Design Museum, Zeka (Centre for Physically Disabled Children), the Basel School of Education, and the Stuttgart State Academy of Fine Arts.

Sophie Kellner is dedicated to the diversity of the textile medium in terms of haptics, interaction and its application as a spatial and physical environment. In search of a tender type of electronics and digitality, she experiments with (non-)electronic materials, components, and codes and designs interactive objects and spaces to explore an alternative aes-thetic of electronic appearance and user interaction. The intensive process of craftswomanship and coding and the critical consideration of functionality receive special attention in her work and mediation.
