Experimental Design and Media Cultures (IXDM)

IXDM is a research unit and group assigned to carry out basic and practice-oriented research. It focuses on developing and conducting critical-reflective and creative-experimental design and media research.

IXDM is a research unit and group assigned to carry out basic and practice-oriented research at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel. It focuses on developing and conducting critical-reflective and creative-experimental design and media research, relying on approaches and methods from various branches such as design, media and cultural sciences, anthropology, sociology as well as science and technology research. A special focus is on digital and post-digital design along with media discourses and their impact on current forms of knowledge and conduct.

An integral part of the Institute is the Critical Media Lab (CML) providing excellent spatial as well as technological conditions for creative-experimental research, exchange of knowledge and teaching. In connection with the Academy’s interdisciplinary Monday Programme, IXDM offers a study programme of its own in the form of Critical Media Studies where students get to know about current research topics during course work and, together with their instructors, test the potentials of the concept of Teaching-Lab-Research.

Head of the IXDM Institute at the Campus of the Arts is Prof. Dr. Claudia Mareis.

Experimental Design and Media Cultures (IXDM)

Research profile and methodology

At the IXDM Institute scientific and design-related and artistic methods and modes of presentation become intertwined in innovative ways. Design, research and knowledge generation are understood as discourses and practices that mutually define one another. For this reason the IXDM-based projects join up basic design and media research with the practice of design and media in specific usage contexts. We rely on a combination of historical and ethnographic methods with design-related approaches such as design-prototyping, data visualization, sonification and speculative design to better understand past and current events and to reflect on future developments.

Current research projects are focused on superordinate topics such as the conception of experimental knowledge, creativity cultures, design and media critique, and material epistemologies. The projects conducted at IXDM not only promote the innovative development of new questions and insights but also contribute to the experimental advancement of new methods and forms of interdisciplinary research. The IXDM research group’s wide range of competence and expertise ensures that these targets can be met.

Critical Media Lab

The Critical Media Lab (CML) is part of IXDM. It provides a unique work environment and platform for conducting explorative reflection-in-action. In its capacity as a distinctive part the Basel Campus of the Arts, CML is not only a workspace for emergent media technologies but also a venue where researchers convene to exchange ideas and where lectures and public events are staged. CML pools and makes visible the aspects of IXDM research that involve the general public. In addition the lab is a space for conceptual framing, a testing ground for discussions on the terms and practices of criticality.

Critical Media Studies

In connection with Critical Media Studies, the IXDM Institute offers seminars and lectures as part of the FHNW Academy’s interdisciplinary BA programme. Critical Media Studies focuses on the engagement with and (re)construction of experimental design and media cultures. Instead of describing media phenomena merely superficially, the courses promote reflection on and through the media and develop an awareness for the infrastructures and technologies on which design, art, politics, business and science are founded. Apart from communication technologies and mass media we are generally interested in the objects and artefacts through which knowledge is saved, transferred, processed, presented and communicated. Critical Media Studies links up artistic and design practice with critical thinking and theoretical-historical reflection in order to contextualize media technologies, subject them to “critical” conditions and present alternatives. Instead of describing the smooth running of a given system, we shed light on critical processes, materials, contexts, etc. and interpret them in ways that questions the system as such.

On a regular basis the Critical Media Lab organizes workshops and research colloquia; these are open to students, colleagues and interested guests.
